GM AD244 High Output Alternator Updrade - 05-03-08

The GM AD244 was an optional high output 130amp alternator available on full-size trucks from 1999 to 2003 or so. It is reported to put out 80+ amps at idle speeds (some say 100 amps) which blows away the stock CS130D alternator that puts out only 40 amps at idle. The AD244 is true plug and play to. It used the same mounting and electrical conections as the stock s-series alternator. The only acception being the belt which needs to be 1" longer. I want to give credit to a couple forum threads and their authors for doing the research and experimentation to discover this easy plug and play mod: ZR2USA.COM and S-10CREWCAB.COM

I paid $50 for the AD244 I got out od a 2000 Silverado at a local salvage yard. It came with a 6 month warranty. I took it up to Advance Auto Parts and had them test it before putting it on and it tested good. I bought a 6-groove Dayco Belt #5060970 which was 97 5/8" long, exactly one inch longer than the stock belt of 96 5/8" long. An ACDELCO Part # 6K970 should be 97 5/8" also. I tried hard to fit the stock belt over the AD244's pulley but it just would not go. I thought there might be enough play in the belt tensioner, but no way. Have to get the bigger belt.

Below are the photos. The clean new looking one is my stock rebuilt one. Funny that a dirty salvage yard alternator works better! The larger dirty one is the AD244 High Output Alternator.

Below is my stock CS130D rebuilt alternator

And one more:

Here is the belt:

After a couple days of driving with it installed, everything with it looks just fine. Its putting out a remarkably steady 14.2 volts. I will update here if any problems would come up with it.

This mod saved me from the expense of buying a $300+ after market high output alternator from Powermaster or Nations. If you need more than 130 amps, this would be the alternator build. There is even a 145 amp version of the AD244 available stock on the 2004 Escalade.
